The Auckland Region, also known as Greater Auckland, is one of the sixteen regions of New Zealand and is named after the city of Auckland. It is the country’s largest urban area and includes the Auckland Metropolitan Area, smaller towns, rural districts, and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Home to about 33 percent of New Zealand’s population, it has by far the largest population and economy of any region in the country, while having the second-smallest land area. Auckland Region covers 4,941.13 km² (1,907.78 sq mi) and had an estimated population of 1,715,600 as of June 2021, giving it a population density of 347 people per km². The region has 3,702 kilometres (2,300 mi) of coastline and about 21,000 kilometres (13,000 mi) of rivers and streams, roughly 8 percent of which are in urban areas. The highest point in the region is the summit of Little Barrier Island, at 722 metres (2,369 ft).
