Tocumen is an area of the district of Panama. Located in the eastern part of the metropolitan area of Panama City. The community of the same name emerged in the early 1950s, as a logical consequence of the construction of the Tocumen International Airport.1. It has a surface of 65.3 km² and with a population of 75,000 inhabitants it is the second most populated village in the country, only surpassed by its neighbor Juan Díaz. In 1972, Tocumen was a village of peasants, with a few streets and houses, and today, thanks to the construction of several urbanizations, it is one of the most populated towns in the district of Panama. In addition to the airport, numerous educational and service institutions are located there, as one of the headquarters of the Technological University of Panama. At present, the airport is the most important in the country and occupies 20% of the extension of said corregimiento. Its peculiar name seems to be due to that of a cacique who lived in this area.
