Penedés Spain

Penedès is a natural and historical region of Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the southern part of the Principality of Catalonia, nestled between the pre-coastal mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea. The regional division of the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1936 and 1987, split Penedès into three administrative districts: Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, and Garraf, with their respective capitals being Vilafranca del Penedès, el Vendrell, and Vilanova i la Geltrú. Historically, Penedès has been a border region within the county of Barcelona since the beginning of the ninth century, with its center in the former military town of Olèrdola, which was fortified again due to the Christian advance in 929. Olèrdola lost its defensive importance and its status as the capital in the second half of the twelfth century, at which point Vilafranca del Penedès became the capital. During the thirteenth century, the Vegueria of Vilafranca was formed, encompassing all of Penedès and most of Anoia as the sub-vegueria of Igualada. The provincial division of 1833 split the region between the provinces of Barcelona, which includes Alt Penedès and Garraf, and the province of Tarragona, which includes Baix Penedès.
